Overview
Realizing the promises of the Human Genome Project in terms of enhanced understanding of health and disease will necessitate an enormous amount of research that involves human participants. It is clear that this research will raise critical ethical, legal and social issues. Accordingly, it is essential that those charged with designing, conducting and overseeing this research have a thorough, practical understanding of these issues. This is especially important given the intense scrutiny of the current oversight system used to afford protections to those involved with research. The primary objective of this project is to design and evaluate a series of practical web-based educational modules on genetics research ethics for members of Institutional Review Boards and investigators to facilitate the development and oversight of important research that is sensitive to the relevant ethical, legal and social issues.
